  • Breaking Into the Olympics

    Breaking Into the Olympics

Breaking is about to make a major leap onto the world stage in the most prestigious way possible: the Olympics! For those who love dance, hip-hop, or simply pushing the limits of what’s possible with the human body, this is huge news. Let’s break down (pun intended) how this street dance from the Bronx is about to electrify the globe.

    The Origins of Breaking

Breaking began in the 1970s in the Bronx, New York, as part of the vibrant culture of hip-hop that was emerging at the time. It was a way for young people to express themselves, channel their energy, and connect with their community. The dance form is characterized by its athletic moves, such as spins, flips, and freezes, combined with intricate footwork and a deep connection to the beat of the music. Breaking quickly spread from the streets of New York to become a global phenomenon, influencing everything from fashion to music to pop culture.

What started as a way for marginalized youth to tell their stories through movement has now grown into a worldwide movement with competitions in almost every country. But despite its global reach and deep cultural significance, breaking has always maintained its underground roots—until now.

    Breaking Makes Its Olympic Debut

The Olympics have always been about showcasing the very best of human athleticism, so it’s fitting that breaking, a dance form that demands incredible skill, creativity, and physical endurance, will finally be included. At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, breaking will make its debut, marking the first time that a street dance form is recognized on such a prestigious platform.

This inclusion is part of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) efforts to modernize the Games and appeal to younger audiences. Alongside sports like skateboarding and surfing, breaking represents the IOC’s commitment to evolving with the times and embracing the dynamic, diverse world of contemporary sports and culture.

    The Olympic Schedule for Breaking

At the Paris 2024 Olympics, breaking will take place on August 9th and 10th, with competitors showing off their best moves in a head-to-head battle format. Dancers, known as B-Boys and B-Girls, will compete in a series of battles judged on creativity, technique, style, and musicality. The competition will be fierce, with the world’s best breakers going toe-to-toe for Olympic gold. Make sure to mark your calendars because this is an event you won’t want to miss!

What This Means for the Future of Breaking

Breaking’s inclusion in the Olympics is more than just a big moment for the dancers themselves—it’s a game-changer for the entire culture. This recognition on a global stage validates breaking as not just an art form but also as a sport. It opens up new opportunities for breakers everywhere, from increased sponsorship and funding to more structured training programs and competitions.

For young people, especially those who are passionate about dance and hip-hop culture, this could be the start of something big. Seeing breaking in the Olympics might inspire a whole new generation of dancers to pick up the practice, push their limits, and chase their dreams. It also means that breaking might become more accessible, with more schools and communities offering classes and opportunities to get involved.

    How to Get Involved

If you’re excited about breaking and want to give it a try, there’s no better time than now! Whether you find a local class, start practicing moves with your friends, or simply dive into watching battles online, the key is to start moving. Breaking is all about creativity and self-expression, so don’t be afraid to make it your own.

As the world tunes in to watch breaking at the Olympics, remember that every top B-Boy and B-Girl started somewhere. With dedication, passion, and a love for the art, who knows? Maybe you’ll be the one inspiring the next generation of breakers at a future Olympic Games.

So get ready to break boundaries, break stereotypes, and most importantly—breakdance!

  • Throwback Thursday Pt 2 – The Passing Of The Olympic Torch ’12

Throwback Thursday Pt 2 – The Passing Of The Olympic Torch ’12

In 2012 we held an audition to create the Gravesham legacy – a group of young people that would take part in the passing of the Olympic Torch. This audition encompassed every secondary school in Gravesham – 100 people auditioned with 30 people making the group.

Once the group was put together they trained once a week for 12 weeks in various street dance styles including popping, krump, hip hop and also contemporary. The group created strong bonds with one another and made remarkable improvements over their 12 week training period.

Rehearsal sessions took place at the Cascades Leisure Centre and Cygnet Leisure Centre (Northfleet) as the group worked hard to perfect their moves and give Gravesham something to be proud of.

The team arrived in town looking the part in their assortment of Team Kaizen t-shirts, trainers and dancewear and performed pieces that were themed around the Olympics which included boxing, javelin, 100 metre sprint and swimming.

As the Olympic Torch was passing Gravesend the team performed and it was all shown live on BBC One. They performed 3 times on Gravesend High Street as crowds gathered and wanted more.

As well as the performances the troupe also created a video called Gravesham Legacy which can be found on Youtube. The video showed the group in training at Cygnet Leisure Centre including parts of the routine they performed at the Adizone in Promenade.

Medals were given out after the last performance by the mayor of Gravesham Lyn Milner. They also received images of the day from photographs taken by Sarah J Knight and Gravesham Legacy t-shirts.

The performers’ legacy continued to live on during the actual Olympic Opening Ceremony when the team of street dancers performed outside the local Civic Centre in front of a huge erected screen which aired the opening ceremony live.

This was a rewarding project to be involved in that united all eight of the secondary schools in Gravesham. The students picked up a lot of skills and matured along the way as they were put through their paces by the instructors that coached them throughout the project.

  • Throwback Thursday – The Riverside Festival ’14

Throwback Thursday – The Riverside Festival ’14

The Riverside Festival is a local annual event that is free for all Gravesham locals to take part in. Team Kaizen are regularly invited down and can be seen providing showcases and workshops for festival goers.

In 2014 we brought down our dance academy to do some short demonstrations throughout the day to entertain the locals. Team Kaizen tutors also provided dance workshops in house, hip hop, popping, locking and breaking for the general public to try their hand at.

We also invited our street dance after school club at Wrotham Road primary school to get involved and they also took part in showcases at the festival.

The Academy trained for 12 weeks for this event and on the day itself there were no less than 5 performances and 8 workshops – a non-stop fun day for all involved. This was just one of 6 performances that the academy did in 2014!

The event went very well with the students enjoying the excitement of performing in front of a live audience and also in front of their watching friends and family.

The Street Dance Summer Workshops Recap

    What a week!!

The Street Dance Summer Workshops was a huge success! We started off with a packed room full of some shy and nervous students, this is all changed half way through our first workshop when everyone started to get into the swing of things.

A new Street Dance style was taught everyday, the styles were taught by some of our resident Team Kaizen tutors and a couple of special guest tutors. The styles we covered throughout the week were Breaking, Locking, House and Hip Hop as well as some choreography and party dances.

From everyone here at Team Kaizen we would like to say a huge well done to everyone who took part over the week, we saw some huge improvements due to everyone working so hard.
